Is age a factor?
At 51 are you considered over the hill by employers? regardless of qualifications....Told exactly that ,off the record by one employer that this is indeed true....
Firstly, thank you for your question you do not mention the sector or type of role that you applied for where you received this feedback from? This could be an important factor to consider as I dont have these details I will answer you in the broader context. We cannot make the generalisation that all Employers will hold the same view toward the Mature Worker. Recent findings have shown that it is in fact the opposite out there on the Market. You or the potential Employer cannot ignore the experience and maturity that those who fall into the 50+ bracket offer. Other important indicators such as loyalty, commitment and motivation rank very high in this grouping. A recent ESRI survey found that 50 per cent of firms have no preferences as to worker age and that nearly 60 per cent valued the experience of mature staff What I would suggest is that you target the roles that best suit your experience and more importantly areas that you are motivated to work in. This along with a relevant and up to date curriculum vitae, interview preparation and confidence will go a long way to you winning the role that you want. If the team here at OnlineCareerManager can be of any further assistance to you with regard to this, please do not hesitate to call. Kind Regards Michelle 086 3838171
