Caroline – Senior Level
After working for many years as a Project Manager, Caroline has progressed her career to a middle management position. She was very happy in her current company except for one thing, more like one person – her Boss!
She felt undermined by the way he treated her, she believed he was putting her down in front of her colleagues and behind her back. He never seemed to agree with her ideas and made her second guess her decisions constantly. Exasperated and tired of continous confrontations - she felt he was leaving her with no other option than to move on from the company.
This was something she really didn’t want to do as she felt her future was within the organisation where her hardwork was recognised by other members of the Management team. Caroline logged onto Onine Career Manager to get the help to make her next career move.
Through some Career Consultancy sessions she was encouraged to see the situation from her manager's perspective. She came to the conclusion that her Boss may feel threatened by having to manage such a bright young thing, and may not really feel so confident in doing so.
She still didn't feel able to talk to him about it. The Consultant encouraged her to talk privately with a trusted colleague – she chose a Manager who was someone she had worked closely with over the years on various projects and knew her well enough to give her advice.
This Manager was quick to point out her value in the organisation and that she did have a future in the company. This reinforced her desire to stay with the company and stick it out until another option arose – and one did! A couple of months later a position came up in another department, this would not only be a promotion but would also allow her to move out of her Boss’s department. She worked with the Career Consultant to ensure she succeeded at the interview to win the promotion. The competition was stiff, a mix of internal and external candidates applied, but Caroline with the backing of Online Career Manager was confident and she got the promotion.
Ironically her old Boss was very sad to lose her to another department!
